The Speakeasy is where you can find all the hidden things that don't make it into print: deleted scenes, free short fiction, book playlists and more. It's my creative underworld. Look around, have a drink, and come back often—just don't call the publishing police.
Deleted Scenes | Book Playlists | Serial Shorts
Some scenes end up in the cutfile.doc graveyard, but I still love them.
I don't listen to music while I write (too distracting), but I often put particular songs on repeat for hours while I'm polishing scenes or brainstorming plot points. Each book ends up accruing a set of songs that, to me, evoke some of the same emotions as the story. You may notice some recurring artists here. What can I say? I'm a creature of habit. I also have very eclectic taste.
- Dog Days are Over—Florence & The Machine
- Hard Way to Fall—Ryan Adams & the Cardinals
- The Long Way Home—Norah Jones
This used to be Jason's theme song, until he met Susannah.
- Awake My Soul—Mumford & Sons
- Look After You—The Fray
- Easy Tonight—Five for Fighting
- Summer Nights—Rascal Flatts
Susannah has never heard this song. If she did, she'd turn off the radio. But Jason loves it.
- I Can't Help Falling in Love—Elvis Presley
- I Want to Dance with You—Live
Every book has a song I keep coming back to over and over, one that ends up being the touchstone for the book. For Anchored, it's this one.

Serial Romance Shorts
For a little while, I participated in group serial short story projects with my fellow 2012 Golden Heart finalists (aka The Firebirds). These are fun little romances you can read on a coffee break, and readers vote on what happens next for each segment. Here are the links to the stories I participated in. There's no forward navigation in the individual segments, so it's easiest to pop back here to get to the next installment.
